Five Contenders, Six Rounds and No Participation Trophies

Short-drama apps ceased to be a niche curiosity some time ago. Sensor Tower counted about $700M in worldwide in-app revenue for the category in Q1 2025, and the US generated 49% of it. Roughly $2.8–3B was the figure for full-year 2025, and the quarterly figure had grown to about $750M by Q1 2026. Search a store for a short reels app and In Other Words, I Love You you will come across at least one of the five names that lead the conversation: ReelShort, DramaBox, ShortMax, My Drama and DramaWave. On the surface, all five seem identical, offering vertical episodes, a cliffhanger every minute or two and a weekly pass waiting behind the paywall. Underneath, though, they diverge on ownership, pricing, platforms and extras, and those differences change what you pay and where you can watch. Across six rounds, we named a winner in each, relying on only store listings, company terms and published industry data as of September 2026.

The Full Comparison Table

The table below puts the entire field on one screen before the rounds begin. As of September 2026, the prices match the figures shown in the US App Store, and they change by country, platform and promotion. We pulled install counts from each app’s Google Play listing. Market shares are Media Partners Asia estimates for the microdrama market outside China. Where a cell says “not reported”, no reliable source published the figure, and we would rather leave a gap than guess. Use the grid as your scoreboard and treat the rounds below as the commentary.

Round 1: Ownership and Size

As the incumbent, ReelShort still holds the most weight. In August 2022, Crazy Maple Studio, a Sunnyvale company backed by China’s COL Group, launched it, and MPA assigns it about 29% of the market outside China. For 2026, MPA forecasts $1.05B, following 2025 revenue of $785M. DramaBox, run by Singapore’s StoryMatrix as a subsidiary of Beijing Dianzhong Technology, launched in April 2023 and commands about 21%. By Q1 2026 the two were tied at roughly $140M each, with DramaBox ranked first, although in Q1 2025, Sensor Tower had ReelShort ahead $130M to $120M. Often mistyped as “dreamwave”, DramaWave is the youngest app here, yet it already holds about 13%, and its annualized revenue reportedly passed $700M by Q2 2026. My Drama is the minnow, with 5M+ Android installs, but it is the only one with Fox Entertainment as a shareholder. Run from Hong Kong, ShortMax seems to be the same app as ShortTV from Jiuzhou Culture. For context, GoodShort holds about 6% and sits just outside this group. Winner: ReelShort, narrowly, on market share.

Round 2: Cost

This is the round where the apps appear most alike. ReelShort, ShortMax, My Drama and DramaWave all sell a weekly pass at around $19.99 in the US App Store, and each one auto-renews. ShortMax also lists a $9.99 “Weekly Pass Pro”, while DramaWave’s weekly VIP starts from $7.99. DramaBox goes a different route, with auto-renewing memberships at $5.99, $17.99 and $19.99 plus special offers from $4.99. The real standout is DramaWave’s monthly VIP at $36.99, the only verified monthly plan in these US listings. Four weeks of a $19.99 weekly pass come to about $80, and that means a monthly plan at less than half that is the smarter buy for steady viewers. Winner: DramaWave, as its monthly plan beats four weekly renewals by a wide margin. Prices differ by country, platform and promotion, so the number on your screen may differ.

Round 3: Watching for Free

On free viewing, the marketing grows loud and the details grow thin. One rewarded ad unlocks two premium episodes, and the first 5 to 15 episodes of a series are usually free, according to ReelShort’s own blog. A seven-day check-in streak brings 100+ coins, but free reward coins usually expire, whereas paid coins do not. ReelShort also operates official channels on YouTube, TikTok and Dailymotion, which offer the easiest legitimate way to sample a reel short drama without paying. Free options exist on DramaBox too, though its exact figures for free episodes, ad caps and check-in coins appear only in third-party guides. Stay away from look-alike sites, modded APKs and “unlimited coins” generators, which are unofficial and never a safe shortcut. Winner: clearly ReelShort.

Round 4: Devices and Platforms

Real differences show up on screens, where these apps genuinely split apart. ReelShort streams in a browser at reelshort.com, and progress syncs across devices, and it also covers iPhone, iPad, Apple silicon Macs, Vision Pro and Android. DramaWave’s verified presence is its iOS and Android apps, and DramaBox’s website mostly directs you back to the app. ShortMax offers web browsing too, since its domain redirects to the ShortTV website. Thanks to an Apple TV app for tvOS 18 or later, something ReelShort’s App Store listing does not show, My Drama holds the trump card. Any of the five will do if a shorts app on your phone is all you need. Winner: ReelShort overall, though My Drama takes the living room.

Round 5: Catalog and Originals

No rival touches ShortMax on raw numbers. The app claims 50,000+ dramas in 19 languages, and as of January 2024 the company behind ShortTV had produced more than 600 mini-dramas for overseas markets, most of them dubbed Chinese adaptations. DramaWave claims 30,000+ dramas in 18 languages, and reports say more than 80% of its newly released content is AI-generated. ReelShort wins on recognizable hits, including The Double Life of My Billionaire Husband and Fated to My Forbidden Alpha, both of which went viral in November 2023. DramaBox responds with an LA production team and originals such as Fake Dating My Rich Nemesis. My Drama has the most interesting pipeline, because Fox has committed to 200+ vertical titles over two years. Winner: ShortMax, on sheer volume.

Round 6: Bonus Features and Fine Print

DramaWave runs away with this one. Its App Store listing promises offline downloads, on-screen comments and 1080p video, and no other app in this comparison has verified offline viewing. The next most useful perk, for viewers who move between phone and laptop, is ReelShort’s cross-device sync. And take a look at the fine print, which varies more than the prices do. My Drama forfeits coins after 12 months of inactivity, and ShortMax’s terms say refunds are not given “unless the paid product/service is unusable”. Always cancel in App Store or Google Play settings, because on any of these apps deleting the app does not cancel your subscription. Winner: DramaWave, by a distance.

Best For: The Final Picks

The right choice depends on how you watch, because no single short drama app wins every round. On Apple TV, My Drama is best: it is the one app here with a verified tvOS version and the only one with Fox-produced originals. For web viewing, ReelShort is best, thanks to a full browser player and progress that follows you between devices. Best for sheer volume is ShortMax, whose claimed 50,000+ dramas overshadow everything else in the grid. Best for commuters and steady bingers is DramaWave, which combines offline downloads with a $36.99 monthly plan. DramaBox is best for backing the current revenue leader, having been ranked first by Sensor Tower in Q1 2026 and picked for Disney’s 2025 Accelerator class. Thanks to its ad unlocks, check-in coins and official social channels, ReelShort is once again best for free, legitimate sampling. If you are tempted by all five, choose one, cancel the weekly pass you are not using and let the cliffhangers wait a day.
